My Preah Vihear Blogs on Global Voices

My blogs about Preah Vihear incident was mentioned by Global Voices Online: Cambodian and Thai Bloggers on Disputed Preah Vihear Temple.

Global Voices Online is international citizen media project, funded by Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society (more detail on About page). I discovered it in 2006 since the YouTube incident. Some readers might already know Preetam Rai, yet another Global Voices writer, from some events or twittersphere. This time, Tharum Bun, a Khmer native who wanted to write a Preah Vihear coverage on Global Voices. He also wanted to find opinion from Thai bloggers, then I provided him a rough translation of my blogs.

(Sorry nationalists, if I disappoint you by being Thailand representative, next time please write your own blogs)

There's nothing new in my part but it's quite interesting to see the opinion from Cambodian side. I can't read Khmer and all stories I read are from either Thai or international media (e.g. BBC). So Tharum's story is worth for discuss.

Something new:

  • (At least) one Thai nationalist went on one Khmer's blog and made some (huge) flame debate.
  • Cambodian business people began to run a donation campaign for Cambodian military at the border. (Did we Thai already have this campaign 46 years ago?)
  • Situation report from another Global Voices author who is now in the disputed area (Cambodian side).

It's nearly impossible to understand the whole picture if you hear from only one side. So Tharum's blog is recommended for all those Thais who are interested in Preah Vihear incident.

My point is still the same: peace is far more important than old ruin temple.

Dear friends,

No swearing please and use our common sense.

It's not just a ruin temple. It's about justice and stand up for your right. If we don't, we will be walked over again by Thai.

I am very sad to hear that Thai and their people is disagreeing with the National Court ruling in 1962 and now again with the UNESCO. We lost so much land to the Thai and Vietnam (Khmer Krom) when the French decided what to give to the Thai/Vietnam and what to stay. I think in the eyes of the world is too cruel to give what Khmer built and always own to Thai. This is why the UNESCO has accepted the Preah Vihear as Khmer Heritage. We had permanently occupied that area over 50 years even during the communist and other tough time such as Vietname and American war. Why some of Thai government agreed to this because they know it isn't their. So people stop stiring up and get over it. Let try to live in peace. You will always be our guess if you behave.

I agree on your word that said Peace is good. But for the old ruin temple it is the soul of our nation, we care for it. How ever it is totally belong to Cambodia, the problem is only on Thai's dispute. I'm not blamimg them, but I hope they can understand it and sole it properly and that solution sould be a justice one.

Now what Thai do? insulting UNESCO and threatening Cambodian with their army surrounded the Temple.
If there's a unity world then there's no war, but PEACE is still the solution.

Khmer solders have all the right in the world to shoot the head off thai's solders when they dare enough came up the temple steps and stand there teasing our boys.
Do you know what would happen if our soldiers get even one step on their land?

Please don't try to be a nice guy. The minute you do so they will walk over your head. With this thurk-like thai (don't know how to spell thurk) we have to be aggresive.
We have kept our head low and tried to be peacefull citizen for many centuries. And look how we wind up to be now.

Dear blogg owner, please don't reject my membership. I just can't keep my mouth shut. And don't forget about thousands of cambodian were dumped down the mountain in the 1980's.

Look at our soldiers. They are to be proud of. They reserve respect and supports from cambodian all over the world. Their courages to face the thai soldiers to protect cambodian interest is so patriotic. They need big applauds and supports.
