If a country wants to enact oppressive laws that censor citizens and foreigners alike that's their prerogative. Just another reason to boycott travel to such a country. It's not the only country I'd choose to forgo unless I had to travel.

ป.ล. Economist โดนบล็อคไปเป็นฉบับที่สาม เริ่มไม่น่าตื่นเต้นแล้ว ตัวบทความในฉบับนี้ไม่มีอะไรเลย เมื่อเทียบกับฉบับแรกสุด

Compared to Engadget, TechCruch or CNET, Slashdot is not the fastest news source on the internet. But the reason I still read Slashdot every morning is its community.

Ask Slashdot might be the best thing on Slashdot. I've tried to reproduce this phenomenon on Blognone but haven't achieved that level yet.

Today, there is a thread on Ask Slashdot about Tools & Surprises For a Tech Book Author? . The answers are varied but some really strike my mind:

First, expect it to be another full-time job. It takes up as much time as you have, and even more, and forget about having a personal life while you're writing it.

That's exactly what I have discovered during the Drupal book.

Make writing a habit. Set a production schedule and stick to it -- its too easy to take a day off, which then turns into two days, into a week, and then just gets worse and worse. Set out a plan, both long term and short term, track your progress, update the plan as you go, and keep writing.

It can't be more true. My session last 6 months and counting (even with detailed schedule!)

ผมและ Slashdot ไม่สนใจประเด็นเรื่องทุนนิยม แต่ประโยคเจ้าปัญหาในจดหมายคือข้อเสนอให้จอร์จ โซรอส สร้างโมเดลของรัฐบาลแบบใหม่ ที่พัฒนาจากโอเพนซอร์ส

George Soros, a man of staggering wealth, has stated that he would like to be remembered as a philosopher. My suggestion is that this great man start and sponsor a forum for great minds to come together to create a new system of government that truly represents the common man’s interest, while at the same time creating rewards great enough to attract the best and brightest minds to serve in government roles without having to rely on corruption to further their interests or lifestyles. This forum could be similar to the one used to create the operating system, Linux, which competes with Microsoft’s near monopoly. I believe there is an answer, but for now the system is clearly broken.

อ่านความเห็นใน Slashdot ก็สนุกดีนะครับ (เป็นหนึ่งในเหตุผลสำคัญที่ผมอ่าน Slashdot) แต่ยังไม่จริงจังและลงลึกเท่าที่ใจอยากเห็น ประเด็นที่ผมสนใจคือ เราสามารถนำ best practice ของการจัดการชุมชน (คำที่ถูกคือ governance) ของโอเพนซอร์สมาใช้ได้ขนาดไหน เช่น การเลือกตั้งของ Debian ที่เข้มแข็งมาก หรือ แนวคิด BDFL ที่หลายๆ โครงการค่อนข้างประสบความสำเร็จ

ถ้าประชาธิปไตยทางตรงมีจริง มันน่าจะออกมาหน้าตาคล้ายๆ แบบนี้ เราอาจร่างรัฐธรรมนูญกันด้วย stet เหมือนกับที่ร่าง GPLv3 (กดไปดูตัวอย่าง)

(ถ้าแบบเวอร์ๆ หน่อย เราอาจจะเลิกอ้าง The Communist Manifesto หรือ The Wealth of the Nations หรือ John Lock/Voltaire แล้วหันมาอ้าง The Cathedral and the Bazaar หรือ RMS แทนก็ได้)

ถึงแม้ว่ายุคสมัยนี้จะมี Digg มาบดบังรัศมีในแง่ทราฟฟิก แต่สิ่งหนึ่งที่ Slashdot ยังกินขาดยี่สิบห้าช่วงตัวคือคุณภาพของคอมเมนต์ที่อัดแน่นไปด้วยคุณภาพ ตัวอย่างชัดๆ คือเซคชัน Ask Slashdot ที่ส่งคำถามพิสดารๆ เข้ามาให้คนอ่านช่วยกันตอบ แถมคำตอบแต่ละครั้งก็แบบสุดยอดทั้งนั้น ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Informative, Insightful หรือ Funny

Ask Slashdot อันล่าสุดนี้ก็เป็นคำถามที่ค้างคาใจมานาน คุณพ่อลูกหนึ่งขวบ บ้าเห่อลูกมากปีเดียวถ่ายวิดีโอลูกไป 100GB ฝากคำถามว่าจะเก็บข้อมูลยังไงดีให้อยู่นาน 20 ปีให้ทางบ้านช่วยกันตอบ คำถามทำนองนี้ต้องการคำตอบที่ practical เพราะชาวบ้านอย่างเรา จะให้ไปซื้อดิสก์เทพ มาใช้มันก็คงหาไม่ได้ง่ายนัก

อ่านคำถามแล้วตอบเองไม่ได้เลยต้องไปแอบอ่านคำตอบของทางบ้าน รู้แค่ว่า DVD ปริงโก้ที่เคยไรท์มา อยู่ได้ไม่ถึงสองปีก็เจ๊งไปเสียเยอะ

ข้อสรุปออกมาแนวๆ เดียวกันคือไม่มีโซลูชันใดที่มั่นใจได้ 100% โดยต้องกระจายความเสี่ยงเอาเอง โดยวิธีพื้นฐานคือใช้ควบระหว่างไรท์ลง DVD ปกติ กับเก็บลงใน RAID 5 แล้วหมั่นเช็คข้อมูลอย่างสม่ำเสมออย่างน้อยปีละครั้ง และถ้ามีฟอร์แมตใหม่ออกมาในอนาคตก็ต้องขยัน convert ข้อมูลเก่าลงฟอร์แมตใหม่ด้วยอีกประการหนึ่ง

เรื่องพวกนี้เข้าข่ายวิศวกรรมความเสี่ยงหรือเปล่าหว่า?
